Addiction & Trauma Treatment
Over recent years there has been a wonderful evolution toward the LGBTQ community within the addiction treatment field. This evolution was spawned for a number of reasons, the biggest of which being the tremendous growth in substance abuse issues within this community, both here in Orange County and Southern California as well as nationwide.
While the predominance of Methamphetamine (aka. speed, meth, crystal and glass) within the LGBTQ community is quite profound, there has also been a shift toward other very addictive drugs, such as cocaine, GHB, ecstasy (MDMA), molly and a variety of others.
Lotus Place Recovery of Orange County, CA offers a specialized addiction treatment track for the LGBTQ community. As we know, drug & alcohol abuse and addiction in general present major challenges for anyone, but even more so for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.
Why Substance Abuse is Higher in LGBTQIA Community
- Higher rates of depression among LGBTQ individuals
- A need to escape constant social stigmas, homophobia and discrimination
- Desires to numb or enhance sexual feelings
- To Ease shame and guilt related to LGBTQ identity
- Family shame and/or religious conflicts
- Pressure from peers to use substances / avoiding negative core beliefs
- Trauma is constantly re-experienced when “rewounding” occurs from family, friends and society
It is a double-edged sword, in that many of the factors contributing to the development of addiction in LGBTQ individuals, also prevent them from seeking treatment. Addiction and mental illness carry a heavy social stigma on their own, but an LGBTQ identity compounds that stigma even more. Additionally, many in the LGBTQ community worry that they will not be able to find treatment in an environment that makes them feel safe. Many are unwilling to enter traditional addiction recovery programs due to their fear of being targeted, ostracized or bullied by heterosexuals in these recovery programs.
